South brunswick, Nj merging crash  repair shop

Have you ever come close to an accident from merging? Has anyone ever hit you while merging onto the highway? Have you ever hit anyone while getting onto the highway or entering a lane? Surprisingly, these types of accidents are quite common as many people don’t fully understand the rules of the road and how to properly merge. At Rally Motors, we seek to help all of our customers learn the best ways to avoid a merging crash while also being there to make the necessary repairs if one ever does occur.

What Causes Merging Accidents?

Majority of drivers who get into merging accidents often do so because they have trouble judging the distance between approaching vehicles and theirs. Other times, it’s not even the merging vehicle's fault, but the person who is in the lane you need to merge into. Even switching lanes could lead to a harmful accident involving more than one car. A merging crash is nothing to write off either, as the injuries you could sustain can be extremely serious like spinal cord injuries, fractures, and even brain injuries. What causes a merging accident could be one of many things but we’ve listed some common instances below.

A vehicle cutting another one off

Crossing multiple travel lanes at one time

Driving too slow on the on-ramp and therefore merging too slowly

Changing lanes or turning without the use of a blinker

Merging too quickly on the on-ramp

How to Correctly Merge Onto the Highway

For some, driver’s ed was a long time ago. For others, the laws of the road don’t matter to them. Either way, we want to help our customers maintain safety while behind the wheel as driving conditions can be highly unpredictable. Therefore, we did our research and came up with easy steps you can follow to keep your driving record clean and keep yourself, and those in your vehicle, safe at all times.

Step 1: Build up speed. Make sure that when you are merging that you are traveling at the same speed as the traffic in the lane you are looking to merge into.

Step 2: Use your blinkers. They are there for a reason. Other drivers need to be able to see your intentions so they can make the correct adjustments to let you in.

Step 3: Look for gaps. If traffic is heavy, then you should only merge if and when you see a gap in the traffic. Entering in a gap is the best way to ensure safety while switching lanes.

Step 4: Safely merge. When you see your gap, turn on your blinker, and safety enter the lane at the same speed as moving traffic.

Tips:

Check other car’s body language before making your choice. A car that is slowing down is likely letting you in but a person who is speeding up does not want you to get in front of them.

Create gaps as you drive. There should always be space between you and the car in front of you, and behind you in case someone suddenly brakes or needs to swerve.

Do not make abrupt moves. Don’t jerk into a lane and always make sure to alert those you are merging.

Don’t stop. You should never come to a stop in the merging lane as it becomes too dangerous to stop and start up again after.
